My first finished projects for 2010 -- it's so exciting to feel like everything can be a little bit new just because it's the beginning of the year. Although, every year I am completely astounded at how fast the days seem to go by, and this year is no exception. It's already the 21st of January for crying out loud! How did that happen? I can't remember if I even wrote down any new year's resolutions or if I just thought about them.
I love thinking about what things I might make this year, and I've even got a few finished. Socks for Chris that I started last August. Man, does it feel good to get these finished. The stitch pattern I took from the Herringbone Rib Socks by Kristi Schueler (free), but I put the pattern onto a different plain sock pattern so that I could knit them from the toe-up and thereby use up every last yard of yarn and make them as long as possible.
There are a lot of "clubs" in knitting; you pay a subscription fee in advance and then every month or every other month or every third month you get a package with yarn and a pattern. It's fun and a neat way to get special yarn or patterns before they are sold publicly (most clubs don't sell the club stuff for a full year afterward). Well, this year I created Maya's Mens Sock Club to motivate me to knit Chris a pair of socks each month for the whole year. And I happen to have (surprise!) twelve different sock yarns that I chose and purchased to make socks for him (well, eleven now that I've finished the above herringbone socks). It was great fun picking out eleven different sock patterns that will both be acceptable to Chris and interesting to me to knit. If anyone is interested in the particular patterns let me know and I'll share, most are free but a few are paid patterns.
I've also finished a totally adorable little sweater for my friend Kathryn's new son, Toby. The sweater will fit him next fall/winter rather than this unless he's growing freakishly fast, which I doubt. This pattern is also free, written by Joelle Hoverson; Child's Placket Sweater.
It's even cuter in person. And the yarn I actually won, isn't that crazy?, from a contest on one of my favorite blogs: Knitters-Knitters (she writes about her knitting and her family of six kids--I'm jealous!).
I'm working on a super cool shawl for ... someone ..., two more sweaters for new babies, socks for me, a wedding present blanket, and choosing a belated new-baby sweater to knit (so a toddler sweater I guess).
Oh! I almost forgot--how I wish I had a way to record Abe's laugh when we "steamroll" around on the floor! It's the best sound in the world. Steamroll = I hold him and we roll over and over across the room. He doesn't get squished.
